Alyeska Pipeline Selects Plateau to Provide Blended Learning and Improve Business Processes
Plateau's Learning Management System to be Integrated with 7 Software Applications At Pipeline Company, Enabling Automatic Delivery of Learning
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA JULY 12, 2001 Plateau Systems, a provider of software that manages learning and improves business processes for organizations, announced today that Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (Alyeska) will use Plateau's learning management system to deliver customized training to thousands of employees and contractors along the 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline System.
Plateau's ELMS will deliver a blend of Web-based and instructor-led learning for roughly 900 Alyeska employees and up to 3,000 contractors working in Valdez, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and along TAPS. It will also provide distance learning opportunities for technicians at the pump stations along the 800 miles of pipeline, which runs from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.
Alyeska plans to integrate Plateau's Enterprise Learning Management System (ELMS) with seven of its enterprise software applications. The integrations are expected to improve Alyeska's security, human resources management and financial management processes, and allow employees and managers to proactively develop individualized learning plans based upon corporate needs and personal career goals. The integrations will also help Alyeska comply with stringent regulatory rules relating to operator qualifications. Plateau's ELMS will integrate with the following systems:
- Human Resource Information System
- Security Management System
- Passport Work Management System
- Performance Management Database
- Training Matrix Job Role/Function System
- Financial Management System
- Qualifications Instrument Maintenance
We anticipate that Integrating Plateau's learning management system will improve our business processes across the organization, and ensure the right training is identified and delivered to the right people, said Alyeska's Karen S. Anderson, Training Department Analyst. The implementation of Plateau should help us to streamline our processes. We also anticipate significant savings and increased efficiencies.
Alyeska transported approximately 17 percent of the nation's domestic crude oil production last year. Based in Anchorage, Alaska, the company is charged with operating and maintaining the massive Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) for six of the world's largest oil companies. Approximately one million barrels of oil flow through the pipeline every day.
Alyeska will also use Plateau's ELMS to automate the creation of development plans for each of its employees, ending the need for a costly manual 120-day review process of development plans that the company had performed every year.
Plateau's software schedules, tracks and manages learning for employees across their careers, and instantly alerts them to new training requirements if they change jobs or if new regulations are created. Using ELMS, Alyeska anticipates that it will be able to maintain an auditable record demonstrating that its employees and contractor employees participate in the regulatory and other training required to perform their jobs.
Currently, Alyeska's training program does not allow the company's employees to link to external training, take tests online, or conduct self-study. Plateau has committed to deliver all of those capabilities, allowing operators, administrators and technicians to complete coursework in the most efficient manner, regardless of their location.
Because of our geography, accessibility is really key for Alyeska, Anderson said. The e-Learning capabilities of Plateau are expected to open up a lot of opportunities for us.
Our work with Alyeska highlights many of Plateau's unique strengths, said Paul Sparta, Chairman and CEO of Plateau Systems. No other learning management system can provide a blended, mission-critical learning solution that allows companies to greatly improve their knowledge management.
About Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.: Alyeska Pipeline Service Company maintains and operates the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). The pipeline transports crude oil from the oil fields on Alaska's North Slope across 800 miles of tundra, rugged mountains, and rivers to Valdez — the northernmost ice-free port in North America. Built from 1975 to 1977 for about $8 billion, it is one of the longest pipelines in the world, and one of the greatest engineering feats of our time. Once oil is loaded onto tankers, Alyeska's Ship Escort/Response Vessel System helps tankers safely navigate the 70 miles through Prince William Sound to the Gulf of Alaska.
About Plateau Systems: Plateau manages learning and knowledge processes for organizations, improving their business operations by integrating and delivering the knowledge employees, customers and partners require to excel. Plateau's enterprise-class software supports online and traditional learning methods, and integrates seamlessly with other enterprise software applications to enhance their value and reduce the cycle of learning. Plateau 4 Learning Management System (LMS) is built on open, J2EE/EJB architecture, and is being used by clients across the globe, including Motorola University, Federal Express, Nestle USA and the U.S. Air Force. The company was founded in 1996, and is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.
